If you already bought extension hair online and want us to clip it in, the honest answer is that we probably will not. Extension hair only works when it matches your natural density, your color level, and the attachment method going into your head. Hair bought without a fitting almost never gets all three right. The mismatch shows up fast: a visible line at the root, a color that reads wrong under salon lighting, or a weft that sheds within a few washes.
We hear this question often. Someone finds a listing for "100% Remy" hair at a price too good to pass up, or a friend sends a bundle site link. We understand the instinct. Extensions feel like something you should be able to shop for the way you shop for a coat. They are not. They are a system: the hair, the method that holds it in, and the person who matches it to your natural hair and maintains it every six to eight weeks. The buying side gets covered in more depth in our guide on where to buy good quality hair extensions, which walks through what separates real Remy hair from hair that is only labeled that way.
Why the hair and the install cannot be separated
A salon will not install hair you bought elsewhere because extension hair is prepped for one specific method. Wefts built for a beaded row are stitched and weighted differently than tape-in hair. The color also has to be toned to your natural hair in person. When the prep or the tone is wrong, the hair slips, sheds, or shows a line, and the salon owns the result.
Cuticle-intact Remy hair is a good sign. It is not the whole story. What matters just as much is how that hair was built for the method going into your head. Here is how the three methods we install differ before a single bead is placed.
- Natural Beaded Row. How the hair is prepped: Wide machine wefts, cut and sealed to your row length, hung on a beaded track. Who it suits: Medium to thick hair wanting real length and density. Move-up rhythm: Every 6 to 8 weeks.
- Hand-tied rows. How the hair is prepped: Thin, flexible hand-tied wefts, lighter per row, more rows layered. Who it suits: Fine to medium hair that needs weight spread out. Move-up rhythm: Every 6 to 8 weeks.
- Tape-in. How the hair is prepped: Pre-taped panels sandwiched around a thin section of your hair. Who it suits: Fine hair, shorter commitments, added length without rows. Move-up rhythm: Every 4 to 6 weeks.
Buy hair built for one of those and install it with another and the blend never settles. We have written before about why hand-tied extensions slip when the base and the method do not agree, and the same problem shows up with hair bought sight unseen. It is not a small detail. It is the difference between hair that carries you through several move-ups and hair you are replacing in a month.
What we check before we order any hair
When you book extensions with us, we do not skip straight to ordering. We fit first. Here is what that involves, in order:
- Check your natural density. Fine, fragile hair needs a lighter weft and fewer rows so your own hair is not asked to carry more weight than it can hold.
- Match the color level in person. Extension hair gets custom toned to your hair. It never gets picked off a rack labeled "medium brown."
- Look at how your hair behaves. Wave pattern, coarseness, and how it dries all change which texture of hair will blend with yours.
- Ask about your week. Someone who swims twice a week or wears a tight ponytail daily needs a different plan than someone who mostly wears it down.
- Review your hair history. Box color, smoothing treatments, or chemical services done elsewhere change how your natural hair takes to a base.
- Recommend a test strand when needed. If we are working off color from another salon, we may ask for a test strand first. That is not us being difficult. It protects the hair you keep long after any extension has grown out and been removed.
Guests drive in from Rolling Meadows, Palatine, and Arlington Heights to sit through that fitting before any hair gets ordered, and it is the part that makes the install predictable. Our consultation guide covers what to bring so it moves quickly.
What happens when hair skips that fitting
Sometimes the hair itself is decent. The problem is almost always the match: wrong color level, wrong texture, wrong density for the method the guest wants. Tone we can occasionally work with. Density and texture we cannot.
Here is the mechanism, since it helps to know where things give out. A weft has a return edge, the stitched or tied top that holds every strand in place. Hair built for a taped panel has no return edge strong enough for a beaded track, so once it is sewn down, the tension pulls strands loose from the top edge and the row starts shedding. You see it as thinning at the weft while the ends still look fine.
The second failure is weight. Every bead anchors a small section of your own hair. Hang a heavy machine weft off fine strands and that section carries more than it was built for, day after day, through sleeping and brushing and ponytails. The strand takes the stress right at the bead. That is where it snaps, and a snapped anchor section is not something a move-up fixes. We have to move the row and let that spot rest.
Toning has limits too. We can shift tone, warm or cool, and we can knock down brass. We cannot change the level of hair that came in too light or too dark, and we cannot make coarse hair read fine next to your own. So instead of a routine move-up at six to eight weeks, you are back sooner, paying for a redo, and the hair you actually keep has taken the hit.
The short version: get the hair and the install from the same place, which is the person doing the work.
The deposit and cancellation policy, in plain terms
Because extension appointments involve ordering custom hair ahead of your visit, we take a deposit to reserve your appointment. That deposit goes toward the day of your service. Color and hair extension appointments must be canceled 48 hours before your appointment. We know that feels like one more step. It exists because the hair is ordered specifically for you before you ever sit in the chair.
Six stylists, one standard
Eleven11 has six stylists, including our lead stylist with over 30 years behind the chair. Every install here follows the same fitting process no matter who books you, whether it is a Natural Beaded Row set, a hand-tied row, or a tape-in refresh. That consistency is on purpose. It is also why we would rather do the fitting first and order the hair second.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I bring extensions I already bought to my appointment? Bring them to a consultation before you book an install. We will look at the color, texture, and how they were built, together. We cannot promise they will match your hair or suit the method you want.
Is Remy hair always good quality once it is in the salon? Remy tells you the cuticle direction is intact, which is what keeps hair from tangling. It does not tell you whether the hair was built for your method or toned to your color. Both matter just as much.
Why do you ask for a test strand sometimes? We recommend a consultation or a test strand when we are working off color from another salon, especially box color. It shows us how your hair will actually respond before we commit to an order.
What if I need to cancel my extension appointment? Color and hair extension appointments must be canceled 48 hours before your appointment time. That gives us room to adjust the schedule and the hair order.
