How to Prep for a Consultation at Eleven11 Hair Studio

A guest booked a complimentary consultation with us last month and showed up empty-handed, five minutes late, with a vague idea that she wanted "something different." We spent the first fifteen minutes just trying to figure out what she actually did not like about her current hair, and by the time we got to solutions, she had to leave for her next errand. She left frustrated, and honestly, so did we.

That is the thing about a free 30-minute consultation. It is a real gift, but only if both sides use the time well. At Eleven11 Hair Studio, we block off that half hour to actually listen, look at your hair in natural light, and build a plan you can afford and maintain. When guests show up prepared, we can cover color, cut, extensions, and aftercare in one sitting. When they show up cold, we barely get past introductions.

Here is what we wish more people knew before walking through our door in Rolling Meadows.

What a Consultation Actually Is (And What It Is Not)

A complimentary consultation is a planning appointment, not a service appointment. We are not touching your hair with color, scissors, or extensions that day. We are sitting down with you, looking at your hair in the state it walked in, and building a realistic roadmap for what you want to achieve, how long it will take, and what it will cost.

That distinction matters because a lot of guests arrive expecting us to squeeze a trim or a gloss into the 30 minutes. We cannot, and we would not want to. Rushing a service into a planning window is how mistakes happen. The consultation exists so that when you do book your actual appointment, we already know your hair history, your lifestyle, your budget, and your goals, and we can execute cleanly instead of troubleshooting in real time.

What you get from a good consultation: a clear recommendation, a price range, a time estimate, a product plan for at-home care, and an honest answer about whether what you want is realistic in one visit or whether it needs to be built over two or three. What you do not get: a discount on your future service, a guarantee that we can fit you in next week, or a haircut squeezed in at the end.

Show Up On Time, With Your Hair as It Really Lives

We say this with love: please do not wash and style your hair for a consultation. We know the instinct is to look put-together for a first meeting, but a fresh blowout hides everything we need to see. We cannot assess your natural texture, your frizz pattern, your porosity, or how your color is actually fading if you have flat-ironed away all the evidence.

Come with your hair the way it looks on an average Tuesday. If you air-dry, air-dry. If you have not washed in three days and it is oily at the roots, that is fine. If your ends are dry and your color has gone brassy in the sun, we need to see that. Yvette, our owner and lead stylist, has been behind the chair for over 30 years, and she can read a head of hair in about ninety seconds when it is presented honestly. When it is styled and product-loaded, she is guessing.

On timing: our schedule is tight. If your consultation is at 2 p.m. and you arrive at 2:10, you now have a 20-minute consultation, not a 30-minute one. We cannot run over into the next guest's time, and rescheduling means you wait another week or two for the next open slot. Build in a buffer for traffic on Central Road, especially around school pickup hours.

Bring Photos, But Bring the Right Kind

Inspiration photos are genuinely helpful, but the photos most guests bring do not tell us what they think they tell us. A Pinterest board full of blonde balayage on twenty different women with twenty different base colors, face shapes, and lighting setups gives us a mood, not a plan.

Here is what actually helps. Bring three to five photos, not thirty. Pick images where the lighting is natural (window light, outdoor, not a filtered studio shot). Include at least one photo from behind or the side, not just the front, because that is where most of the work happens. And bring one photo of a color or cut you actively do not want, because knowing what to avoid is often more useful than knowing what to chase.

If you are considering extensions, this matters even more. The difference between hand-tied wefts, Natural Beaded Row, and toppers comes down to your hair density, your lifestyle, and your maintenance tolerance. A photo of someone with a completely different hair type wearing extensions does not tell us whether that method will work on you. It tells us the finished look you like, which is a starting point, not an answer.

Be Honest About Budget, Time, and What You Actually Do at Home

This is the part guests dread, and we understand why. Nobody wants to talk about money with a stranger. But we cannot build you a realistic plan if we do not know what you can spend, both on the initial service and on the maintenance behind it.

A full head of hand-tied extensions with color is a different investment than a lived-in balayage refresh. Both are beautiful, both are valid, and neither is right if it does not fit your life. When you tell us upfront what your ceiling is, we can steer you toward the version of your goal that actually works. When you keep that information back, we might spend the whole consultation designing something you were never going to book.

Same goes for time. Some services need three-hour appointments every six weeks. Others can stretch to twelve weeks with the right maintenance plan at home. If you travel constantly for work, or you have small kids and can only escape once a quarter, tell us. We can build around that.

And please, be honest about your home routine. If you air-dry and never touch a curling iron, we will not recommend a cut that requires daily heat styling to look right. If you use drugstore shampoo and have no interest in switching, we need to know so we can plan around the buildup. There is no judgment here. We just need the real picture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to book a consultation before my first appointment? Not always, but we strongly recommend it for anything involving major color change, extensions, or a cut you are nervous about. Simple services like a trim or a gloss touch-up can usually be booked directly. If you are unsure, book the consultation first. Thirty minutes now saves hours later.

Is the consultation really free? What's the catch? It is genuinely free, no catch. We offer it because a well-planned appointment produces a better result, and a better result means a happier guest who comes back. That is the whole business model. We do ask that you cancel or reschedule at least 24 hours in advance if something comes up, out of respect for other guests waiting for that slot.

How long does the consultation actually take? We block 30 minutes. Most consultations run 20 to 25 minutes if you come prepared, which gives us a few minutes of buffer. Extension consultations sometimes run the full 30 because we need to feel your hair density, discuss install methods, and talk through maintenance in detail.

Can I get my hair done the same day as my consultation? Almost never, and here is why. Once we know what you want, we need to book the appropriate time block for that service. A full color and cut might need three or four hours, which is not sitting open on our schedule that day. We will typically book your service appointment at the end of the consultation for the next available slot that fits your timeline.

What if I don't know what I want yet? That is completely fine, and honestly it is one of the best reasons to book a consultation. Come in and tell us what you do not like about your current hair. We can work backward from there. Sometimes the clearest path forward starts with ruling things out, not chasing an inspiration photo.

Ready to Plan Your Next Visit?

The guests who get the best results from Eleven11 are the ones who treat the consultation like the working meeting it is. Show up on time, show up as yourself, bring the right photos, and be honest about the budget and lifestyle piece. Do that, and we can build you a plan that actually holds up between appointments.

When you are ready, book your complimentary consultation and we will get you on the schedule.
