A guest sat in our chair last week looking at our service menu on her phone, trying to figure out why we offer both an Express Base Touch-Up and a Custom Base Touch-Up. She wanted the faster option, but she also did not want to end up with a color line down her part or a shade that did not match the rest of her hair. She asked us straight out: when is the added cost actually worth it?
This is one of the most common menu questions we get at Eleven11 Hair Studio. Both services cover grey and refresh your root, and both are done by a licensed stylist with real color training. The difference is not quality. The difference is what your specific hair needs on that specific visit, and knowing which one you need saves you money on the visits where Express is plenty, and saves you a color correction on the visits where it is not.
What Is the Actual Difference Between Express and Custom?
Express Base Touch-Up is a single-formula root application designed for guests whose base color is stable, whose grey pattern is consistent, and who are coming in on a regular six-to-eight-week schedule. We pre-mix one formula that matches your existing base, apply it to the new growth at the scalp, process, and rinse. It is fast, it is clean, and it works beautifully when nothing about your hair has changed since the last visit.
Custom Base Touch-Up is the same core service with a consultation and formulation step built in. We look at how your grey has come in since last time, whether your midshaft has faded, whether the previous formula lifted warm or stayed true, and whether you want to shift the tone at all. We then mix a formula (sometimes two, one for the hairline and a slightly different one for the crown or nape) that addresses what your hair is actually doing right now, not what it was doing six months ago. The extra time is spent in the formulation and often in a glaze or gloss at the bowl to refresh your midshaft and ends.
The small price difference covers the extra formulation time, the additional product when we need to run two bowls, and the finishing glaze when your midshaft needs it. It is not a markup for the same service. It is a different service. You can check current pricing for both services on our service menu.
When Express Is All You Need
Express is the right call when three things are true. Your grey pattern has not shifted since the last visit. Your previous formula still looks the way it did the day you left. And you are on a consistent schedule of every six to eight weeks so there is only a small band of regrowth to cover.
Guests who have been coming to us for a year or more on a steady schedule often live in Express appointments. Their formula is in our system, their grey has come in the same way it always does, and their midshaft and ends still look fresh from the last full color or gloss. In those cases, paying for a Custom would be paying for work your hair does not need.
Express also works well for guests who are stretching the time between full color services and just want to knock down the visible line at their part before a work trip or an event. It is a refresh, not a reset. If that is what you need, that is what you should book.
When Custom Is Worth the Investment
Custom is the right call any time your hair has changed since your last visit. That includes new grey coming in a different pattern (many guests notice grey spreading from the temples back, or a new patch at the crown), a midshaft that has faded warm or brassy from the sun or from hard water and mineral buildup common in Rolling Meadows, or a stretch longer than eight weeks between visits.
It is also the right call when you want to shift the tone at all. Going a half-shade cooler for winter, warming up your base by a level, or blending in more grey than you did last year all fall under Custom because they require reformulation. If you tell us at check-in that you want your color to look a little different than last time, we are already in Custom territory.
We also recommend Custom when it has been more than ten weeks since your last visit. The regrowth band is wider, the demarcation between your base and your midshaft is more visible, and a single-formula application at the root will not blend cleanly. In those cases, paying for Express and hoping for a Custom result is how guests end up with a color line, and fixing that line costs more than the upcharge would have.
After 30-plus years behind the chair, I (Yvette) can usually tell within the first look at your part whether we are in Express or Custom territory. Resistant grey at the temples, the wiry kind that grows in shiny and refuses to lift without a stronger formula or a longer process time, is one of the clearest Custom flags. If we have flagged that in your file before, we will guide you to Custom every time.
How We Help You Decide at Check-In
We do not want you paying for a service you do not need, and we do not want you booking Express when your hair is going to need more. Every guest gets a quick check-in at the bowl or the chair before we start mixing. We look at your regrowth, we look at your midshaft, and we ask you two questions: has anything about your grey changed since last time, and do you want your color to look any different than it did on the way out last visit?
If both answers are no and you are on schedule, Express is what you booked and Express is what you need. If either answer is yes, we will tell you honestly that Custom is the better call for that visit and explain why. You are never stuck with an appointment type. We would rather guide you to the right service in the moment and have you leave happy than run an Express on hair that needed more and have you come back frustrated in three weeks.
This is also where a complimentary consultation before your first color visit with us pays off. Once we have your hair's history in the system, choosing between Express and Custom on future visits gets a lot easier.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my grey pattern has changed? Look at your part and your temples in a bright, natural light before your appointment. If you see grey in places you did not see it three or four months ago, or if a section looks noticeably more grey than the rest, your pattern has shifted and you should book Custom. If it looks like an even continuation of what you had at your last visit, Express is fine.
Can I add a glaze to an Express appointment? Yes, but at that point we usually recommend booking Custom instead. A glaze on top of an Express often takes the same total time as a Custom, and Custom includes the formulation work that makes the glaze look intentional rather than added on. Ask us at check-in and we will guide you.
What if my midshaft is faded but my roots look fine? That is a classic Custom scenario. Express only addresses the new growth at the scalp, so if your midshaft has gone brassy or dull, an Express will leave you with a fresh root and faded lengths, which reads as a two-tone. Custom lets us refresh both in one visit.
How often should I be booking a root touch-up? Most of our color guests land on a six-to-eight-week schedule for base touch-ups, with a full color or gloss service mixed in every second or third visit. If you are stretching to ten or twelve weeks regularly, plan on Custom every time. If you are consistent at six to eight, you can often alternate Express and Custom depending on what your hair is doing.
Does the type of grey I have matter? It does. Resistant grey (the wiry, shiny kind common at the temples and hairline) often needs a slightly different formula or a longer processing time than softer grey, and that is a Custom conversation. If you know your grey is resistant or if we have flagged it in your file before, default to Custom.
